Walaa Maharem-Horan jumped into activism after Mayor Svante Myrick posted on Facebook that he would like to keep Ithaca a welcoming place for refugees. Maharem-Horan, an Arabic speaker, offered to be a translator if necessary. Those that left positive comments became Ithaca Welcomes Refugees, a group Maharem-Horan has become a well-known member of.
