SYRACUSE, NY (WHCU) – Violent crime numbers in Syracuse are down.
Statistics from the Central New York Crime Analysis Center show that from January to June this year, homicides are down by 36% compared to the same time period in 2023. Shots fired also dropped 33%, and shootings with injuries have decreased by 56%.
United States Attorney Carla Freedman represents the Northern District of New York. She is encouraged by the numbers.
“If present trends continue, this year Syracuse will have the fewest shootings with injuries and fatalities of the five-year period since 2019,” said Freedman. “We still have over half a year to go, including the summer when violent crime can spike, but I have never been as optimistic about the trends as I am now.”
Freedman added the data represents a lot of hard work by groups acting together.
“The Syracuse Police Department, state and federal law enforcement agencies, the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office, community groups, city government including the Mayor’s Office to Reduce Gun Violence, non-governmental organizations, the faith community, and neighborhoods have combined to lower the level of violent crime in Syracuse after the historic highs of the pandemic and its aftermath years. We are working together as never before, and the results are proving this is what it takes to make people safer.”
